If one were to ask us:
What are you?
We would feel compelled to offer the uniquely human answer that we are a whole-within-wholes.
Uninterestingly — this answer looks lovely when written but sounds terrible out loud. When spoken, it becomes “A hole within holes” — which sounds like something else entirely.
Although have to admit — its not a bad answer because we did all cum come out of two holes. First the male urethra then the female vagina.
But wholes-within-wholes is a way better answer because of this explanation:
Somewhere hidden deep in the recesses of our brain is a single particle we’ve named Merlin. Does Merlin know she exists? We don’t have a clue. Yet she might now that we have named her and called her our own.
The fascinating thing is that Merlin is actually a very old soul. Part of the initial fabric of the universe. She was there when the spirit first hovered over the face of those dark waters.
And regardless of whether Merlin knows what or when or where of why or for whom she is existing — she does know how to organize herself with her particle comrades to form a whole atom.
They accomplished this feat relatively quickly. Then after a couple eons of floating around in deep space — Merlin’s atom found itself in the nuclear core of a massive star. She was being fused into a larger whole.
Calcium.
It took a little while — but Merlin finally got into her element.
And we are already losing track of what she is exactly. A particle? atom? Or mineral?
Yes?
Whatever she is, she then got hurled out into space by said massive star when it exploded in a supernova.
Eventually, she would get caught up in the gravitational attraction of a whole new planet.
A different kind of planet.
One that had all the ingredients for life.
God knows where all Merlin went on this planet or who she’s been inside of.
A goofy looking triceratops? The fish that swallowed Jonah? Ray Romano?
Maybe!
All we really know is that our DNA somehow convinced Merlin to be here in us now.
What do you think was said?
Wonder if she was in some cow’s milk we drank and she was flowing down the digestive system when something pulled her aside and said “Hey you are a beautiful bit of calcium. Wanna come join this body? We’ve got a Synaptotagmin molecule you’d be perfect for — it is right over there in our hypothalamus. Let us show you what it looks like.”

This is what it looks like?
Okay feeling very grateful that our DNA knows how this thing works because we don’t have a clue. Is this a molecule? Are all molecules this complex?
And wait… so we’re saying that Merlin’s story started with her flying solo out of the cosmic cannon that initiated the universe and now she is part of a whole Synaptotagmin inside of our hypothalamus?
My God, that is breathtaking.
And we haven’t even gotten to the best part!!!
The best and most fascinating part of all of this…
Is that Merlin’s story has been so enjoyable to write — that her fancy molecule has sensed it — and responded by triggering the release of dopamine.
So by observing this plucky little particle — we brought her into the light of being— and then unexpectedly demonstrated a relationship with her in the present moment.
That is astonishing.
Merlin…
Baby girl…
Stardust munchkin… sorry we don’t know how to properly address you — but we just want you to be known and loved. Keep up the great work. Thank you for being part of our body.
Do we see how we are wholes-within-wholes ?
Let’s unpack the whole set of russian nesting dolls from smallest to largest.
(for her sake of course)
A whole particle
within a whole atom
within a whole element (calcium)
within a whole molecule
within a whole cell
within a whole hypothalamus
within a whole brain
within a whole human being
within a whole family
within a whole community
within a whole culture
within a whole species
within a whole planet
within a whole solar system
within a whole galaxy
within a whole cosmos.
